Grants
The Grants Division at the City of Douglas plays a crucial role in securing funding to support the realization of the Mayor and Council's policy priorities. The team is dedicated to identifying, applying for, and managing grants that align with the City's vision for a thriving community. The Grants Division works collaboratively with various departments to ensure that financial resources are efficiently and effectively utilized to meet the policy goals set by the Mayor and Council.
Mission of the City of Douglas:
The mission of the City of Douglas is to enhance the quality of life and achieve sustainable growth by carefully balancing the environmental, economic, and social needs of the community. The Grants Division plays a pivotal role in realizing this mission by securing external funding that aligns with these principles, ensuring a harmonious and prosperous future for Douglas.
Mayor & Council Policy Priorities
1. Infrastructure:
The City of Douglas places a high priority on infrastructure development and maintenance. The Grants Division actively seeks funding opportunities for projects related to roads, water/wastewater, telecommunications, and other critical infrastructure to ensure the community's safety and connectivity.
2. Downtown Revitalization:
Focused on preserving the historical significance of downtown Douglas, the City of Douglas aims to breathe new life into the area. Grants are pursued to support initiatives that promote economic development, arts and culture, and the overall vibrancy of downtown Douglas.
3. Managing Growth and Annexations:
Balancing growth with sustainable practices is a key objective. The Grants Division collaborates with planning and development teams to secure funding for projects that manage growth responsibly and support annexation initiatives.
4. Economy, Jobs, and Amenities:
The Grants Division actively seeks funding to boost the local economy, create job opportunities, and enhance amenities that contribute to the overall well-being of residents. This includes grants for economic development projects, job training programs, and recreational facilities.
5. Community Facilities, Special Events, and Tourism:
Investments in community facilities, such as libraries and parks are a priority. The Grants Division works to secure funding for the construction and improvement of these facilities, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the community. To promote community engagement and attract visitors, the Grants Division pursues funding for special events, festivals, and tourism initiatives. These efforts aim to showcase the unique culture and attractions of Douglas.
6. Streets and Roads:
Ensuring well-maintained streets and roads is a fundamental aspect of the City of Douglas' vision. The Grants Division seeks funding for road improvement projects, traffic management, and other initiatives to enhance transportation infrastructure.
Following guidance from the Mayor and Council after a citizen's petition, the city has initiated grant searches and funding discussions to kickstart this endeavor. The center's design includes provisions for an innovation lab, recreational areas, a community kitchen, a business incubator, and spaces tailored for senior and youth activities. This initiative, currently in the planning stage, aims to bridge crucial infrastructure gaps, fostering social cohesion, healthier lifestyles, and economic resilience.
The Douglas Multi-Generational Community Innovation Center Project is dedicated to creating a dynamic and inclusive environment that promotes learning, innovation, and recreation for people of all ages. By repurposing a municipal building, this transformative project seeks to address the needs of our rural, economically disadvantaged community.
Of particular importance to our community is the introduction of essential services such as broadband internet access and flexible community spaces, essential for bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusivity. This Multi-Generational Community Innovation Center will offer a variety of activities, including multi-purpose basketball courts and an indoor soccer field, significantly enriching recreational opportunities. Ultimately, this project aims to enhance social unity, promote healthier lifestyles, and stimulate economic growth, ensuring that every resident benefits from this initiative.
