The Mexican Baseball Fiesta added Douglas, Arizona to its lineup in 2017. The Mexican Winter Baseball League’s version of “Spring Training”, who has called Tucson it’s home for seven years will now also be coming to Copper King Stadium, once the site of professional baseball in this region.
Two teams from the Pacific Winter League of Mexico (Liga Mexicana del Pacífico) - Los Cañeros de Los Mochis and Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo will participate. Los Mochis will play Hermosillo in a single game on Thursday October 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm. With the projected success of Douglas on the Mexican Winter League stop, we anticipate a return trip every year.
The Mexican Baseball Fiesta in 2017 will also play in Las Vegas, San Luis, Mesa, Nogales (AZ), and Tucson. This is the first introduction to professional baseball to the City of Douglas that will pair two Liga Mexicana del Pacífico teams.
The Mexican Baseball Fiesta began in 2011 in Tucson and was the brainchild of former professional LMP and minor league baseball pitcher Francisco Gamez. Mike Feder, at the time the General Manager of the Tucson Padres, worked with Gamez to launch the tour which has been steadily growing in popularity.
“I am very honored and excited to have a high caliber baseball exhibition game in Douglas, AZ providing a special binational opportunity for the community to enjoy this great outdoor pastime sport with our Mexican neighbors. Another great celebration for the greatest Border community in the State of Arizona.” Mayor Robert Uribe, City of Douglas, Arizona.
“The Mexican Pacific League, is as popular in Mexico as Major League Baseball is in the U.S., if not more so,” said Francisco Gamez, Mexican Baseball Fiesta, founder and MBF partner. Gamez played over 10 years in the Mexican Pacific League as well as in the Milwaukee Brewers organization in the states. “Constant excitement is the best way to describe the Mexican Baseball Fiesta. The energy of the fans, the music and fun make this a unique experience for all baseball fans. This event embraces our Mexican friends and visitors.”
Mike Feder, President of the Mexican Baseball Fiesta, said “We are extremely excited that the Mexican Baseball Fiesta continues to grow. Each year’s events draw thousands of passionate fans”. Feder was a general manager in minor league baseball for 30 years (15 years in Tucson). "The Mexican Baseball Fiesta is a rare opportunity for baseball fans in the U.S. and Mexico to experience authentic Mexican baseball games, which features a festive atmosphere including live music and authentic regional Mexican cuisine. The Mexican Baseball Fiesta is not just a baseball game; it's a party!” said Feder.
